St. Martin’s U13s show great hurling qualities
St Martins U13s performed exceptionally well at the Lisdowney 7s last Saturday. In an evenly contested 1st round against Danesfort the lads played to the final whistle and ran out winners by 2-11 to 3-4. Two opportunist goals from Jack Murphy and some good teamwork from Ronan Shore, Daragh Quinlan and Dan Doyle opened up the Danesfort on a number of occasions to score some good points. With Adam Agar and Justin Manning clearing a lot of ball the lads stayed on top to the end.
Our next match was against Graigue Ballycallan. The warm conditions ensured that the full ten man panel were needed and Tristan Roche, Paul Murphy, Tommy Butler and Harry Kealy all contributed to a great team effort. St Martins started strongly and went into a two goal lead after goals from Daragh Quinlan and Dan Doyle. Unfortunately, we missed some other chances when we were on top which was to prove costly in the end. A highlight again in this match was the point scoring and two wonderful sideline cuts for points by Dan Doyle. As the 2nd half wore on, Graigue fought hard and a penalty and a goal in the last minute of the match saw them run out winners on a scoreline if 4-3 to 2-7.
While the lads ( and selectors ! ) were devastated with the defeat, the quality of their hurling and effort in both matches augurs well for the future. In what has been a difficult year for them at U14 grade, the future looks bright for this group of players if they keep training and hurling.
St. Martins minors overcome Clogh Ballacolla
St Martins minors travelled to Laois on Thursday evening and produced a good performance to see off the tough challenge of the host side.
Martins lead at half time 0-10 to 0-9. In the third quarter they made a burst for home scoring 2-1 without reply which was to prove vital. A total of 17 wides would prove to be a concern but overall the saints were the deserved winners.

Byrne Cup 5th Round
St. Martin’s took on Erin’s Own in the 5th round of the Byrne Cup in Canon Kearns Park this evening. On a miserable evening with torrential rain, the weather didn’t do either side any favours as both teams struggled to gain scores early on. A four goal blitz in a ten minute spell for the home side saw St. Martin’s chasing at half time with a score of 1-4 to Erin’s Own 4-3. The second half did not improve for the visitors as they missed goal chances, however, the backs did work hard to hold the Comer forwards. Final score: St. Martin’s 1-9 Erin’s Own 4-8.

J. J Kavanagh & Sons Junior Hurling Championship
St. Martin’s Junior team took on Black’s & Whites in a sunny Clara pitch. Both sides found it hard to gain scores in the early stages as Paul Maher and Shane Kinsella traded points with Thomas Joyce and Emmett Foley. However, mid way through the second half, the skeoghvosteen side roared into action scoring from every angle. Just before half time, a well taken free from Shane Kinsella over on the far sideline dropped over the netminder’s head into the back of the net to leave two points between the sides at the interval. Within five minutes of the restart, Martin’s had taken the lead by one point for what was to be the first and last time in the game. Their opponents sprung back into life with a flurry of points to pull away once again. From there on, St. Martin’s tried hard to gain scores but found the going tough. Points from Luke Maher and Shane Kinsella were not enough in the end as Blacks & Whites won on a scoreline of 1-19 to 1-9.

On a lovely evening with a great view of Mount Leinster in the distance, St. Martin’s took on the local side Blacks and Whites in the first round of the championship. The visitors found themselves 1-5 to 0-2 down after 10 mins as things looked bleak. However, Adrian Farrell found the back of the net and Donal Shore pointed to reduce the deficit to two points. (1-5 to 1-3) The Skeoughvosteen side were more accurate with their shooting as Jack Dowling and Jamie Byrne traded goals just before half time to leave the score Blacks & Whites 2-10, St. Martin’s 2-5. The second half seemed to go much the same as the first half with the homeside been much more on target than their counterparts who tried hard but were no match for the Blacks and Whites. In a calm Muckalee this evening, St. Martin’s took on Mullinavat in the Junior Hurling League. Shane Kinsella and Donal Shore got the Martin’s men off to a good start going 2 points up before Mullinavat took the lead going 1-5 to 0-3 up with the help of a goal from David Murphy. Points from Shane Kinsella, Paddy Brennan, Luke Maher and Paul Maher clawed the deficit down to one point with 28 and a half minutes on the clock as the half time whistle sounded early to leave the score St. Martin’s 0-10 Mullinavat 1-8. The lead swayed from side to side in the second half with a flurry of points from Jason Shore, Shane Kinsella, Donal Shore, Tommy Quirke and Paul Maher. Jason Shore was called from his lines to take a 20m free which he duly converted by finishing it to the back of the net. However, Mullinvat were busy with Joseph Galvin and Jamie Fennelly picking off points with the latter scoring his sides second goal. Minor hurlers show signs of improvement
St Martins Minors began their championship preparations mixing the good & the bad in a 60 minute performance that was hard to asses.
For the first half they played against the wind and put together some smart moves that saw them lead 2-7 to 0-7 at the break.
After the break the home side seemed to be motoring when they tacked on a goal a few points but again they faded as is the norm with this team. After giving away numerous frees & showing some ill discipline they let the village back into the game with some sloppy defending leaking two goals.
On the plus side their attack looked much slicker than in previous matches but a lot of work needs to be done ahead of the first round of the championship on September 14th.
Final score; St Martins 3-18 2-8 James Stephens B
St Martins: Jason Shore (C), Diarmuid Murtagh, David Walsh, Loughlin Hogan, Conor Dowling, Richard Teehan, Eoin Murphy, John Joe Kelly, Brandon Sheehan, Mark Dowling, Robert Reid, Tommy Quirke, Shane Dowling, Mark Cody, Colm O’Neill.

Byrne Cup Rd. 4 vs Young Ireland’s
St. Martin’s took on Young Ireland’s this evening in the fourth round of the Byrne Cup. Played in Gowran in front of a small crowd, it was the homeside that settled first with two good points. However, St. Martin’s kicked into life when John Mulhall found the net in the 7th minute and Adrian Farrell shot over the bar put their side up after the first quarter. With some more lovely play from John Mulhall, once again finding the back of the net, Paddy Nolan and Luke Maher, St. Martin’s found themselves two up at half time. (St. Martin’s 2-4, Young Ireland’s 0-8). Following on from that, Martin’s hammered home a further 3 goals from the sticks of John Mulhall, Eoin McGrath and Adrian Farrell while Robert Shore, Brian Cadigan and Paul Maher also got in on the scoring act with well taken points.
