Byrne Cup Semi Final vs. Clara

In Clara this evening,  St. Martin’s took on the homeside in the semi final of the Byrne Cup.  The first half was a very tame affair with Clara racing into the lead taking their chances.  Tom Breen, John Maher, Eoin McGrath and James Dowling pointed to reduce the deficit to six points at half time.  (Clara 0-14, St. Martin’s 0-8).  The second half saw a rejuvenated Martin’s side come flying out of the traps.  Within two minutes, the deficit was cut in half when a long range John Maher free landed in around the goal.  Paul Maher pulled on the dropping ball and sent it to the back of the net.  After 20 minutes of hard work, stallwart John Maher got the equalizer with a pointed free.  Luke Maher and Eoin McGrath traded points with their counterparts, but alas, it was Clara who got the upper hand with 30 seconds left on the clock to take the lead by a point.  Final score: Clara 0-22 St. Martin’s 1-18.

Team: Colin McGrath, Bryan Byrne, Ollie Walsh, Jack Dowling, Brian Mulhall, Paddy Nolan, James Dowling (0-1), Thomas Breen (0-3), Paddy Brennan, Paul Maher (1-0), Eoin McGrath (0-3), Luke Maher (0-2), Shane Kinsella (0-1), John Maher (0-7), Robert Shore (0-1).

Senior Hurling League Rd.5

In the final round of the St. Canice’s Credit Union Senior Hurling League, St. Martin’s and Carrickshock measured up to each other in Tom Ryall Park.  While both sides traded scores in the early stages, but Carrickshock forged ahead.  However, mid way through the half  Martin’s got ahead for the first and only time in the game after a nice passage of play between Canice Maher and Robert Shore connecting with John Maher who finished it to the net. (1-4 to 0-7).  After that, St. Martin’s found it hard to get scores from play scoring 3 points from free’s.  However, their counterparts faired a bit better scoring two points from play while also converting three free’s and a 65 to leave the half time score Carrickshock 0-13 St. Martin’s 1-7.   Colin McGrath did very well in goal making at least four great saves throughout the match, he could do nothing about the goal that beat him as he was lying on the ground been attended to with an injury after making a clearance  Luke Maher got a consolation goal for St. Martin’s with two minutes left on the clock but it was a little too late as Carrickshock ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-24 to St. Martin’s 2-12.

Minors hang in for draw in League Semi final

A number of wides cost St Martins as they were unlucky to draw in this Minor League semi final.

Having played against the breeze the Saints would have being confident of turning things around trailing 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.

Instead Dunamaggin gained a 0-8 to 0-6 lead in the middle of the second half where ‘Martins shooting was an issue.

A number of switches saw St Martins take the lead which they held until the dying embers of the game when Dunamaggin fired over a disputed free.

Unfortunately the young saints were to suffer a further blow when Shane Dowlings injuries suffered on the field proved to be far more serious after being taken off.

Final score; St Martins 0-11 0-11 Dunamaggin

Team: Jason Shore, Loughlin Hogan, Richard Teehan, Eoin Murphy, Conor Dowling, David Walsh (Capt), Steven Walsh, Brian Cody, Brandon Sheehan, William Trousdell, Robert Reid, Colm O’Neill, Shane Dowling, Tommy Quirke,  Mark Cody.

Subs: John Joe Kelly, Sean Maher, Jack Nolan (Used), Aidan Egan, Diarmuid Murtagh, Ronan Tynan, Ciaran Cody, Ciaran Brennan.
