U14 Hurlers battle hard against O’Loughlins.
After a lacklustre performance against St Fiacres on Monday evening the St Martins U14 panel earned a deserved draw against O Loughlins B on Thursday evening.
St Martins started slowly and some basic handling errors saw them cough up some easy scores in the first half. Justin Manning manfully tried to hold the defence together at centre back and had a tremendous game for the full hour. Conor Mulhall kept us in touch with 1-1 and a Daragh Quinlan point from a free left the scores at 4-4 to 1-2 at half time.
The introduction of Donal and Daragh Coughlan increased the work rate in the second half and the whole team responded with a magnificent effort. Adam Agar stormed into the game and goals from Jack Murphy, Ronan Shore and a bullet from James Dowling saw St Martins edge two points clear with minutes to go. Loughlins went down the field and were fortunate to goal when a ferocious shot was almost saved by Tristan Roche, who had a great debut.
Great credit is due to the entire team who battled to the final whistle and were rewarded when they were awarded a free 40 yards out. With one point in it and aware that it was the last puck of the game, Daragh Quinlan stepped up and pointed the free to ensure a fantastic draw for the home team.
Final score 5-5 t o 5-5. The lads will have learnt extensively from the effort required to win matches and this should help them in the weeks ahead.
The team lined out as follows:
Tristan Roche, Paul Murphy, Robert Dowling, Tommy Butler, Daragh O Shea, Justin Manning, John Murphy, Adam Agar, Daniel Comerford, Ronan Shore, Harry Kealy, Andrew Buggy, Conor Mulhall, Dan Doyle, Daragh Quinlan. Glenmore 8-6 St Martins 3-0
St Martins U14 footballers kicked off their league campaign with a very tough match against league favourites Glenmore. While the lads were very rusty after the enforced break due to the recent terrible weather, they did not do themselves justice in the first half. To their credit they did not give up and gave a much improved display in the 2nd half to register three goals. Adam Agar and Justin Manning tried hardest for the defeated hosts Conaghy Shamrocks 0-8 St Martins 1-6 On a brutal morning at the Polo Grounds with the rain teeming down St Martins put in a gritty and determined display to edge out their local rivals. With Harry Kealy,Paul Murphy and Justin Manning playing well in defense, Adan Agar working hard in midfield and Dan Doyle,Daragh Quinlan and Robert Dowling combining well in attack the lads held on for a great win. The crucial score for the saints was a well taken goal from John Murphy.
Tullogher-Rosbercon 2-2 St Martins 2-8
In this winner take all clash with the victors progressing to the quarter final, captain Robert Dowling won the toss and elected to play with the gale force wind in the first half.
Knowing that a big lead was required if we were to have any chance the lads played some great football to lead by 2-6 to 0-1 at half time with the goals coming from Conor Mulhall and Dan Doyle and some excellent points from play by Dan (0-2), Daragh Quinlan (0-2) and Robert Dowling.
In the 2nd half the defence came to the fore where sub goalie Jack Murphy, Harry Kealy, Paul Murphy, Liam Brennan, Donal and Darragh Coughlan all put in a tremendous reargaurd action to keep the home side at bay. The whole team put in a massive effort against the wind and were rewarded with two points from play from Dan and Adam Agar to seal the win.
The long journey home didn’t seem to take long as we can now look forward to the quarter final
