Senior Hurling League Rd. 4

St. Martin’s took on Ballyhale Shamrocks in the fourth round of the Senior Hurling League in Bennetsbridge this evening.  Right from the start, the Shamrocks side raced into a 1-5 to 0-3 lead within the first 15 minutes of the game.  The Martin’s men could only manage a further 3 points before half time whilst trying hard to defend as they went in at the interval 7 points down. ( Ballyhale Shamrocks 1-10, St Martin’s 0-6).  The second half saw a little improvement for the North Kilkenny outfit.  They clawed their way back and cut the deficit down to 3 points with a Robert Shore goal.  This was after a missed goal opportunity and conceeding a goal to T. J Reid to go 6 points down mid way through the second half.  However, that was to be the last score of the game for St. Martin’s as Ballyhale proved too strong and ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-11.

Junior B Hurling Championship Rd. 1

In an overcast Coon,  St. Martin’s and O’Loughlin Gaels squared up to one another in the North Junior B Championship.  The homeside were slow to get off the ground with their first score coming from a Donal Shore free but then had to go through almost ten minutes before their next score came.  In the meantime, O’Loughlin’s went 0-3 to 0-1 up.  But then, the first goal of the game came when Damien Tynan crossed a good ball  to Brandon Sheehan who finished the ball to the net for Martin’s to go up by one.  After that, Donal Shore, Tommy Quirke, and Adrian Farrell traded points with Barrie Hogan, Vincent Wallace and David Rice to go in with the mininum between the sides at half time. (1-5 to O’Loughlin’s 0-7).  The second half saw O’Loughlin Gaels been that bit more hungrier in attack.  St. Martin’s found it hard to find scores despite working hard.  The Gaels pulled away mid way through the half outscoring Martin’s by 4 points in the end as the full time score stood at St. Martin’s 1-10 O’Loughlin Gaels 1-14.

Team: Eugene Maher, Shane Egan, Thomas Walsh, Jack Dowling, Paddy Brennan, Alan Murphy, Eoin Murphy, Adrian Farrell (0-1), Tommy Quirke (0-1), Nicky Purcell, Donal Shore (0-7), Brandon Sheehan (1-0), Ruairí Kinsella, Damien Tynan, Colm O’Neill (0-1)

Sean Kelly with Kilkenny Minors 2014Last Sunday was a great day in Croke Park for all in the County. St Martins played Fingallians in an U-12 challenge match in Swords before the bus headed for the Leinster Final. A superb day was had by all with two fine displays from both the Minors & Seniors. The club like heartily congratulate our own Sean Kelly who was a selector with the Kilkenny Minor team that won its 2nd Leinster Title in a row.

St Martins would like to thank St Fingallians for the hospitality afforded to them after the match.

Dowling Family Cup 2014

St. Martins U12’s continued their busy schedule when hosting Bennettsbridge in the Dowling family Cup last Sunday morning.  In ideal conditions both teams served up an outstanding show full of all the best that this great game has to offer.  There have been many great games between the two sides over the last few years and this latest instalment didnt disappoint.

Dowling Cup 2014 1

After a good start with two early points St. Martins got on top and added some great scores. Bennettsbridge battled back bravely and to their credit got some great scores of their own. After an action packed second half with the action swinging from end to end our lads held out for a well deserved victory and a delighted captain Bill Dowling and vice captain Conor Egan received the Dowling Cup from his Grandfather Tom.

Dowling Cup 2014 4

Refreshments kindly sponsored by the Dowling family were then served and enjoyed by all.  The many visitors were also highly impressed with the new car parking facilities and of course the pitch which was as usual in perfect condition.

Special thanks to all who helped out to make the day a great sucess, also to the lads parents who make the effort to get the lads to training and matches, indeed large attendances have been a feature of the year so far and of course to all the panel who have worked very hard all year and victory in The Dowling Cup was just reward for all their effort.

Byrne Cup Rd.2 vs. St. Lachtain’s

On a very calm evening in Coon, the locals took on St. Lachtain’s of Freshford in the second round of the Byrne Cup.  In front of a small crowd, Luke Maher opened his side’s scoring with a point.  Straight after that, the Freshford side got themselves off the mark with a point.  They went 3-1 up before St. Martin’s found their feet and it was level pegging all the way through with points from Canice Maher, Shane Kinsella, Eoin McGrath, Tom Breen and Robert Shore.  With five minutes left in the first half, Martin’s pulled away with further points from Shane Kinsella and John Maher been accurate on free’s to put the score at St. Martin’s 0-11, St. Lachtain’s 0-7 at half time.  The second half restarted with St. Martin’s reasserting themselves and they continued to pull away with substitute Shane Coonan getting his name on the score board with two points from play.  Lachtain’s tried their best to pull back the deficit with a well worked goal from Stephen Farrell, quickly followed by a point from Johnny Fitz to leave the minimum between the sides.  However, the Martin’s men did not wilt as Luke Maher, Shane Kinsella, John Maher, Tom Breen and Robert Shore all took their scores when the opportunities arose with Eoin McGrath finishing off the game with the last point.  St. Martin’s picked up their second win on a scoreline of 0-23 to St. Lachtain’s 1-14.

Byrne Cup Rd. 1 vs Lisdowney

On a glorious summer evening in Lisdowney, St. Martin’s took on the homeside in the first round of the Byrne Cup.  Lisdowney were slow to get started and St. Martin’s took full advantage of this with Tom Breen scoring the first goal of the game followed by points from John Maher and Robert Shore.  Lisdowney scored a brace of points before scoring a goal of their own 20 minutes into the game.   After that, St. Martin’s upped the pace to keep their opponents at bay with points from Adrian Farrell, John Maher, Eoin McGrath and Shane Kinsella to cancel out points from Lisdowney.  The half time score stood at St. Martin’s 1-8, Lisdowney 1-5.

The second half continued as the first half began with goals from Tom Breen and Donal Shore within the first 2 minutes.  The visitors found it hard to hit the target but still kept ahead with points from Canice Maher, Brian Cadigan and John Maher, been accurate on free’s, plus a further two goals from Donal Shore as they went on to take the spoils on a scoreline of 5-13 to 2-11.

Kevin Fennelly Semi-Final

On a breezy Sunday evening, St. Martin’s and Barrow Rangers lined out in the Kevin Fennelly Cup.  St. Martin’s, assisted with the wind in the first half, kept up with their opponents despite them getting a goal midway through the half.  It was a close first half with Shane Kinsella, Mick Morrissey, Donal Shore, Luke Maher and Thomas Walsh all trading scores with the Paulstown side, leaving the half time score St. Martin’s 0-10 Barrow Rangers 1-6.  However, with the loss of Mick Morrissey and Luke Maher through injury early in the second half, and Ranger’s aided by the strong breeze up the field, the second half clearly belonged to them.  St. Martin’s, though been accurate when they did get scoring chances were not strong enough for their counterparts.  The Barrow Rangers outfit went on to win on scoreline of 2-19 to St. Martin’s 0-17.

Team: Paul Maher, Martin Dowling, Aidan Murphy, Shane Egan, Jack Dowling, Mick Morrissey (0-1), Alan Murphy, Paddy Brennan, Adrian Farrell (0-2), Luke Maher (0-5), Shane Kinsella (0-5), Thomas Walsh (0-1), Eugene Maher, James Kelly, Donal Shore (0-3). Subs: Damien Tynan, Tommy Quirke, Eoin Murphy, John Haughney (all used)
