Juniors live to fight another day.

In this local derby, St. Martin’s and Erin’s Own battled it out in the second round of the Junior Championship.  The St. Martin’s line out got off to a flying start working up a 3 point lead with points from Shane Kinsella, Bryan Byrne and Luke Maher before Erin’s Own got off the mark.  However, with all of our half forward line of Tom Morrissey, Brian Mulhall and Shane Kinsella picking off points along with Luke Maher and Bryan Byrne scoring, St. Martin’s kept ahead of the Comer brigade.  Just before half time, the towering and hard working Brian Mulhall was lost to injury after sustaining a hard knock and with that came the half time whistle to leave the score St. Martin’s 0-14 to Erin’s Own 0-7.  In the second half, a gallant Erin’s Own side came out fighting to whittle down the deficit.  They came within 1 point of the leaders when they got a goal to leave the score at 0-16 to 1-12.  It was an exciting finish as both sides gathered all they had to make it to the next stage.  Once again, Bryan Byrne and Shane Kinsella steadied the ship with the last two scores as St. Martin’s ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-18 to Erin’s Own 1-13.

St. Martin’s underage shine at County level.

On a day where Kilkenny had teams playing at U-14, U-15, U-16 & U-17, St Martins had players involved on two teams.

In Wexford with the Kilkenny U-15’s St Martins had representatives in the shape of Brian Cody, Conor Dowling & Jack Manning. They all contributed in the run to the final where Brian started and Conor came on in a tight affair where they landed the spoils 3-3 to 0-9 v Dublin to win the trophy for the first time since 2008. The side was managed by a St Martins man- Patrick O’Flynn.

Jason Shore was with the county U-17’s who lost out to Cork in the All Ireland final by five points.

 Well done to all concerned.

St. Martin’s well represented at County level.

St. Martin’s GAA would like to wish Jason Shore, Brian Coady, Conor Dowling and Jack Manning all the best  as they join the County U15 and U17 teams in the All-Ireland Hurling championships this weekend.

Good win for Martin’s.

The long awaited 4th round of the Senior Hurling League took place this evening in Canon Kearns Park as St. Martin’s clashed with James Stephen’s.  In what promised to be a cracker of a game it certainly did not disappoint.  It was James Stephen’s who rushed ahead going 3 points to 1 up before Paddy Nolan raced up the field and laid off a nice pass to John Maher, who in turn found Eoin McGrath who coolly finished the ball to the net.  Once again, the city side  hit back to regain their lead but with points from John Maher, Joe Maher, Tom Breen, and Brian Mulhall, Martin’s were never going to let them get too far ahead and it was level pegging at 1-9 to James Stephen’s 0-12 at half time.  John Maher and Eoin Larkin exchanged scores from frees early in the second half.  Robert Shore won a dropping ball and ran towards goal finishing it beautifully to the back of the net.  It was now the village who were chasing the game and with Brian Mulhall causing problem’s for the James Stephen’s back line, they were feeling the pressure hitting 4 wides in quick succession.  Colin McGrath pulled off a great save when David Walton look certain to goal.  A John Maher 65 and point from play after a pass from Brian Mulhall kept the scoreboard ticking over.  St. Martin’s weren’t finished yet as Robert Shore’s one handed flick found the back of the net insured their second win of the league.  They now face Fenian’s of Johnstown in the 5th and final round of the league.

Team: Colin McGrath, Niall Moran, Ollie Walsh, Shane Cadigan, Bryan Byrne, Paddy Nolan, James Maher, James Dowling, Canice Maher, Thomas Breen (0-3), Brian Mulhall (0-3), Joe Maher (0-1), Eoin McGrath (1-0), John Maher (0-8), Robert Shore (2-1).

U12 Dowling Cup 2013.

Danesfort were the visitors for the 2013 Dowling Cup held on Saturday evening in Coon. The players and large crowd got lucky with the weather as it remained dry for the start of the match as Mikey Somers threw in the ball. Danesfort got off to the better start as a long range effort snuck in to the St Martins net. The young Coon-Muckalee-Ballyfoyle lads did not let this deter them and they got back in to the game when Dan Doyle’s bullet like ground shot from an extremely tight angle hit the back of the net. Two pointed frees from Daragh Quinlan, a point from play by Bill Dowling and another goal from Donal Coughlan saw St Martins go in at half time in front on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-2 after a very evenly contested half. Shane Brennan made three excellent saves and got great support from the full back line of Paul Murphy, Adam Agar and Mathew Shorthall to keep Danesfort’s scores to a minimum.

The first score of the second half was going to be crucial and  when Shane Fahy finished the ball to the net in a goalmouth scramble, the host team were on the way to victory. St Martins were becoming dominant in their halfback line with Justin Manning, Tristan Roche and  Darragh Coughlan clearing ball after ball. Their teamwork was evident when the ball was fed to Daragh Quinlan midway through the second half who sprinted clear of the Danesfort defense only to see his shot canon back off the crossbar.

Harry Kealy, James Dowling and Jack Murphy all worked hard through the match to make sure that St Martins remained on top. Daragh Quinlan made up for his misfortune earlier with two goals, one from play and one from a 21 yard free. The scoring was complete with points from Harry Kealy and Ronan Shore and a goal from Josh Dempsey. The full panel got a run out and it was great to see Tommy Butler, Joe Reid, Andrew Buggy, Jack Farrell, Conor Mulhall, Shane O Neill, Thomas Lawlor, Cillian Bryan, Lorcan Agar and Willem Smith contribute to the victory. The final score was St Martins 6-5 Danesfort 1-4

After the match Liam Dowling presented medals to both teams and Tom Dowling presented the Dowling Cup to his grandsons, captain Daragh Quinlan and vice captain Bill Dowling. Everybody then enjoyed tea and refreshments in the dressing room to finish off a great day.

Great credit must go to the Coon field committee who had the pitch and grounds in fantastic condition for the game.

Minors play Kilmacow

St Martins 3-15 1-16 Kilmacow

Midway through the second half St Martins looked in trouble trailing by two points but they recovered to earn a place against Clara on the 21st August.

It all began so well for ‘Martins leading 0-4 to 0-1 after ten minutes but eleven wides in the first half proved to be their undoing leaving it all square at the break 1-7 to 0-10.

FinCrackingInaGoalVKilmacow

Kilmacow began the second half the brighter going two ahead but a number of changes saw St Martins pull ahead in the end.
