St. Canice’s Credit Union Senior Hurling League Rd.1

St. Martin’s opened their league campaign against O’Loughlin Gaels in a splendid Canon Kearns Park this afternoon.  John Maher started proceedings for St. Martin’s with a pointed free in the second minute.  Then, O’Loughlin Gaels kicked into action with points from Mark Bergin and Sammy Johnston.   Eoin McGrath slotted a lovely pass from Canice Maher over the bar before setting Thomas Breen up for a point of his own.  Mark Bergin pointed a free awarded to his side to draw the sides level for the only time in the game.  Once again, Eoin McGrath stepped up to the mark to put Martin’s ahead when he fielded a pass from the towering Brian Mulhall. (0-4 to O’Loughlin’s 0-3)  Alas, that was to be St. Martin’s final score for the half as the city side pulled away with a further 1-3 before the whistle sounded for half time.  (HT: O’Loughlin Gaels 1-6 St. Martin’s 0-4).  In the second half, things did not improve for the country side.  With the O’Loughlin Gaels side upping their work rate and finding the posts better than their opponents,  John Maher tried keeping his side in touch scoring 3 points from free’s and a 65.  Meanwhile, O’Loughlin’s were tipping away extending their lead, particularly with a goal from John Doyle.  (O’Loughlin’s 2-10, St. Martin’s 0-8)  John Mulhall added two points while Eoin McGrath fielded a pass from James Maher to further add to his tally.  David Breen goaled to leave 5 points the difference at full time as O’Loughlin Gaels claim their first two points of the league while St. Martin’s must look deeper to get their league back to winning ways.  Full time score: O’Loughlin Gaels 2-13, St. Martin’s 1-11.

J.J Kavanagh & Sons Junior Hurling League Rd.1

On a lovely evening, when Spring had finally seemed to arrive in Coon, a weakened St. Martin’s were no match for a sharp O’Loughlin Gaels side.  With Brian Dowling, Nigel Skehan and Michael Henebry all scoring goals before half time, St. Martin’s were playing catch up all through the game with the half time score standing at O’Loughlin Gaels 3-8, St. Martin’s 0-4.  The local boys tried hard in the second half to cut the deficit, but alas, it was not enough as the game ended with O’Loughlin’s taking the points on a scoreline of 3-17 to St. Martin’s 0-7.

All County Junior Hurling Rd. 1

St. Martin’s Junior team travelled to Clara to take on the home team in the first round of the All County Junior Hurling League this morning .   While they got off on the scoreboard early on with a Shane Kinsella free, it was Clara who raced into an early lead scoring 1-1 in the first 10 minutes.  The forwards did not have much luck finding the posts until mid way through the half when they started to cut into Clara’s deficit.  Points from Noel D’arcy, Luke Maher and Shane Kinsella left a goal between the sides (0-4 to Clara 1-4).  However, Clara bounced back with a goal when awarded a free in front of the goal.  Shane Kinsella and Luke Maher tagged a point each onto Martin’s tally before half time to leave the score St. Martin’s 0-6, Clara 2-5 at the break.  On the resumption, St. Martin’s worked to reduce the deficit with Shane Kinsella scoring once more and Jason Shore sending a free to the back of the net to leave a goal between the sides (1-7 to Clara 2-7).  However, with the lads struggling, Clara powered on scoring a further 2-5.  with Shane Kinsella and Noel D’arcy tagging on more scores and Jason Shore being in hard luck when his 21 yard free was saved, it was not to be our day with the final score St. Martin’s 1-10 to Clara 4-12.

Teams: Jason Shore (1-0), Richard Teehan, Aidan Murphy, Jack Dowling, Paddy Dowling, Mick Morrissey, Paddy Brennan, Luke Maher (0-2), Noel D’arcy (0-2), Shane Egan, Shane Kinsella (0-6), Thomas Walsh, Donal Shore, Adrian Farrell, Eugene Maher.
