Junior B “Joe Walsh” Cup
On a very damp evening in Threecastles, an under-strength St. Martin’s Junior B team took on the locals. Threecastles got off to a flying start and went four points up before Ronan Tynan finished the ball to the net to reduce the deficit somewhat. However, things steadily went down hill with Threecastles going on the rampage scoring points and goals to leave the half time score Threecastles 2-11, St. Martin’s 1-5. With a goal for the local side straight after the resumption, it finished St. Martin’s off, as Threecastles went on as winners on a scoreline of 3-20 to St. Martin’s 1-9.

Senior Hurling League Rd. 3 vs. Clara
With the sun shining on Nowlan Park, two neighbouring teams came to do battle in the Senior Hurling League. Before proceedings got under way, a minutes silence was observed in memory of selector Ronan Ruane’s mother Mrs Breege Ruane (RIP) who passed away during the week. Then, St. Martin’s and Clara lined out against each other but Martin’s were missing James Maher and John Mulhall to injury. Even though they were missed on the pitch, it was no reason for the poor performance of St. Martin’s who were poor through out the field. With only two points from play in the first half and three from free’s, things looked very glum as the half time score was Clara 2-14 to St. Martin’s 0-5. with the loss of Bryan Byrne to injury, Martin’s fortunes did not improve as Clara went on to win on a scoreline of 3-24 to St. Martin’s 0-8.

Junior Hurling League Rd. 3 vs. Tullaroan
On a damp afternoon in Coon, St. Martin’s Junior’s took on Tullaroan in the J.J Kavanagh & Son’s Junior Hurling League third round. After the Senior’s been defeated the night before, St. Martin’s had a big task ahead of them to pick themselves up to collect their first two points of this league. From the throw in, St. martin’s got their first score when Luke Maher split the posts. In the seventh and ninth minutes, Shane Kinsella, been on form, added a further two points (one from play and a pointed free when James Callinan was fouled) to his sides tally. It was only in the 12th minute when Tullaroan’s Eddie Teehan shot one over to open his sides account. However, that was quickly cancelled out when Shane Kinsella, once again, converted a free to leave three between the sides. (St.Martins 0-4, Tullaroan 0-1). Tullaroan then tried to up the ante scoring 1-1 in the next 10 minutes to take the lead for the first and last time. Points from Adrian Farrell and Shane Kinsella quickly regained the upper hand for St. Martin’s while Brendan Cahill ended the first half with a point for Tullaroan to leave the half time score St. Martin’s 0-7, Tullaroan 1-3. The second half started off with both sides sensing the urgency to gain the upper hand. Jason Shore made a great save within two minutes of the restart. Shane Walsh duly put it the resultant 65 over the bar to level the game. A high dropping ball from Eugene Maher was swiftly finished to the back of the net by Conor Kinsella. Shane Walsh tapped a free over for the Green and White to leave two points between the sides. Both sides traded points with Luke Maher and Shane Kinsella been on target for St. Martin’s while Sam Grace, Eddie Teehan, Shane Walsh and Jack Keoghan supplied Tullaroan’s points. However, even though it was a tight affair, St. Martin’s ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-10. Showing great heart and determination to secure the win, they picked up their well deserved first points of this league.

Junior Hurling League Rd.2 vs. Clara
St. Martin’s took on neighbours Clara in Clara this evening. Martin’s got off to a dream start when Damien Tynan connected with a dropping ball and flicked it into the net. Clara’s Jody Crean got his side on the board but Tom Morrissey quickly cancelled that score out. However, that was to be Martin’s only score until mid way through the half as Clara added a further two points. (St. Martin’s 1-1, Clara 0-3) Each side was dealt a blow when reduced to 14 men mid way through the half. From then, the game ebbed and flowed as both sides traded scores to leave the score level at half time. (St. Martin’s 1-6, Clara 0-9) The second half didn’t see things improve for St. Martin’s as Clara upped the ante. They found each other with ease as they picked their points adding a further 1-11. Senior Hurling League vs. Tullaroan Rd.2
On an extremely windy but mostly dry afternoon in Jenkinstown, St. Martins’s took on Tullaroan in front of a large crowd. The first two scores of the game belonged to the Tullaroan side as Padraig Walsh and a Mark Walsh free got their side off the mark. However, St. Martin’s kicked into gear, assisted with a strong breeze, with lovely scores from John Maher Bryan Byrne, Paul Maher and John Mulhall. Tullaroan tried to reduce their deficit with further points from Mark Walsh and Shane Walsh (St. Martin’s 0-9, Tullaroan 0-5). John Maher added 2 points for Martin’s while Paul Buggy slotted one over for Tullaroan. When the referee penalised the Tullaroan keeper for delaying the puck out, after warning him numerous times, he threw in the ball and there was stale mate. As he was going to throw in the ball again, a meleé ensued which ran on for some minutes. Once play resumed, John Maher added one final point to leave the half time score St. Martins 0-12 Tullaroan 0-6. In the second half, both teams came out and gave it their all. In the first ten minutes, Tullaroan held Martin’s scoreless whilst adding two points of their own courtesy of Martin Walsh and Peter Walshe. A Colin McGrath free kick-started St. Martin’s scoring once again. Shane Kinsella delivered a lovely ball into John Maher in the corner who in turn gave a lovely pass to brother Paul who finished it over the bar. (0-14 to Tullaroan’s 0-8) But some say never to write off Tullaroan as in the next minute and a half, they had got to within 2 points of St. Martin’s scoring 1-1. Mark Walsh been the goal scorer. However to prove that goals don’t always win games, St. Martin’s went on the offensive with John Maher, Mick Morrissey, Paul Maher, Colin McGrath and John Mulhall all adding points to extend the lead once again. Martin’s suffered a set back when corner back James Maher had to be stretchered off the field following a tackle from a Tullaroan player. Tullaroan managed three further points, two free’s from the stick of Mark Walsh and one from county player, Tommy Walsh to leave the full time score St. Martin’s 0-24, Tullaroan 1-12.

J.J Kavanagh & Sons Junior B Hurling League Rd 5
It was a dull, drizzly evening in Paulstown as St. Martin’s took on the homeside Barrow Rangers in the fifth round of the J.J Kavanagh & Sons Junior B league. It was the homeside that got out of the traps first racing into a 1-3 lead with the goal coming from Sean Murphy before a Donal Shore free got Martin’s on the score board. With further scores from Donal Shore, Nicky Purcell, Conor Kinsella and a long range free from Ronan Maher, slowly but surely the deficit was clawed back. Just before the half time whistle, a good clearance from Ronan Maher found Adrian Farrell who in turn passed it to Tom Morrissey who rounded his man and shot to the net to leave two points between the sides at half time. (Barrow Rangers 1-8 St. Martins 1-6) Just after the resumption, a pointed free from Adrian Farrell left one single point between the sides. However, the effects of the loss of Ronan Maher who went off at half time through injury was felt in the defence as Barrow Rangers put away some late goals for them to take the points on a scoreline of 5-17 to 1-8.

J.J Kavanagh & Sons Junior B Hurling League Rd. 4 vs Graigue-Ballycallan
On a glorious Sunday afternoon in the rolling hills of Kilmanagh, a small crowd gathered to watch St. Martin’s take on locals Graigue-Ballycallan in the J.J Kavanagh & Sons Junior B hurling league. St. Martin’s were desperate to pick up their first points of this league campaign but a goal in injury time dashed all hopes of that happening. There was no separating the sides all through the first half as Graigue-Ballycallan matched points from Ronan Maher (65), Damien Tynan, Donal Shore (0-2) and Adrian Farrell with the sides level at 0-5 a piece at half time. Just like the first half, the sides were again inseparable with each side cancelling out points from the other until a last ditch effort that found its way to the back of the net to put the local side up by 2 points. John Joe Kelly shot a point just on the stroke of full time to leave the final score St. Martin’s 0-13, Graigue-Ballycallan 1-12.

Junior B Hurling Rd 3 vs Danesfort
On a windy but sunny day in Danesfort, St. Martin’s Junior B’s took on the locals. It looked dismal at half time with only two solitary points on the board compliments of a Donal Shore free and a point from play from Adrian Farrell to Danesfort’s 1-7. As the Martin’s men were heading out in the second half with the wind, they managed to double their efforts from the first half. J.J Kavanagh & Son’s Junior Hurling League Round 4 vs Tullaroan
On the 19th April, Easter Saturday evening, in Tullaroan, St. Martin’s and Tullaroan lined out for battle in the J.J Kavanagh and Sons Junior Hurling League. A small crowd had gathered to watch proceedings with referee, the youthful James Barry in charge . Shane Kinsella opened St. Martin’s account with a pointed “65”after Conor Kinsella made a good run in towards goal only for his shot to be deflected off a Tullaroan defender. Up until the 14th minute, that was St. Martin’s only score as the Tullaroan side went on the rampage early on, notching up 6 points. Shane Kinsella converted a free when Shane Coonan was fouled to leave five between the sides. The aforementioned Shane Coonan and Thomas Walsh each added points of their own before Shane Kinsella converted two more frees before the half time whistle sounded. (St.Martin’s 0-6, Tullaroan 0-11) The St. Martin’s boys were sluggish in the second half as Tullaroan had scored 1-1 within the first two and a half minutes. Once again, Shane Kinsella converted free’s whilst adding two points from play and Noel D’arcy added one to his account. However, Tullaroan kept pulling away as they were awarded a few handy frees but only scored one point from play in the second half. Most of their scores came from the stick of Tom Fitzgerald as he scored 0-12, 0-10 from free’s. St. Martin’s will be grateful that Tullaroan missed three goal chances but a lot of work remains to be done.Full time score: St. Martin’s 0-11, Tullaroan 1-17
