All County Junior Hurling Rd. 1

St. Martin’s Junior team travelled to Clara to take on the home team in the first round of the All County Junior Hurling League this morning .   While they got off on the scoreboard early on with a Shane Kinsella free, it was Clara who raced into an early lead scoring 1-1 in the first 10 minutes.  The forwards did not have much luck finding the posts until mid way through the half when they started to cut into Clara’s deficit.  Points from Noel D’arcy, Luke Maher and Shane Kinsella left a goal between the sides (0-4 to Clara 1-4).  However, Clara bounced back with a goal when awarded a free in front of the goal.  Shane Kinsella and Luke Maher tagged a point each onto Martin’s tally before half time to leave the score St. Martin’s 0-6, Clara 2-5 at the break.  On the resumption, St. Martin’s worked to reduce the deficit with Shane Kinsella scoring once more and Jason Shore sending a free to the back of the net to leave a goal between the sides (1-7 to Clara 2-7).  However, with the lads struggling, Clara powered on scoring a further 2-5.  with Shane Kinsella and Noel D’arcy tagging on more scores and Jason Shore being in hard luck when his 21 yard free was saved, it was not to be our day with the final score St. Martin’s 1-10 to Clara 4-12.

League Win

Muckalee and Railyard squared up for Senior Football League 2014 title in Canon Kearns park. The title holders made a bright start when Colin McGrath pointed a free on three minutes after a foul on Brandon Sheehan who was making his first final debut, three further  points two from Colin and one from James Maher had Muckalee  leading by four points, despite this start Railyard were level on twenty minutes  and took the lead coming up to the break.  Two long range points from Michael Morrissey and Bryan Byrne restored the lead, half time score 0-6 to 0-5. Sterling defender Conor Kinsella had to be replaced before the break due to injury   his replacement Patrick Brennan coming on to play well in his first final. Despite a sleat shower and a strong cross field wind only one wide was recorded in the first half by either side. A pointed free by Colin opened the scoring in the new half.  With little between the sides the first goal was going to be important and it came to Muckalee  a long delivery from midfield was fielded by Brandon Sheehan he passed to Oliver Walsh and he fed Colin to finish in style. Shane Coonan and James added two points and when Brandon was fouled in the square Colin stepped up to despatch the football to the corner giving the goalie no chance in the forthy fourth minute. Tom Morrissey was unlucky with a late effort coming back off the angle of post and cross bar . Railyard came storming back with a fine goal and were striving hard for more but  stout defending by the Murphy’s Alan and Aidan,Noel Darcy , Martin Dowling ,Patrick Nolan  goalie John Coonan all kept them out.  Final score 2-9  to 1-6. With a good spirit in the squad, Rower Inistioge were our next obstacle in the Rionn A football league. Settling well we pointed after 5 minutes with good team play. We responded well to dominate possession and added 2 further points to lead the half time score level 3 pts to 1 goal. St. Martin’s started the second half with a great run from midfield to goal after 3 minutes. With the lions share of scoreable chances adding 3 more points we went into the last quarter 6 points up. Rower Inistioge we’re not finished yet and put a goal and 2 on the board to leave just 1 point in it. St. Martin’s gaoled again with 2 points in reply to leave 2 pts in it heading into injury time. Glenmore 8-6 St Martins 3-0

St Martins U14 footballers kicked off their league campaign with a very tough match against league favourites Glenmore. While the lads were very rusty after the enforced break due to the recent terrible weather, they did not do themselves justice in the first half. To their credit they did not give up and gave a much improved display in the 2nd half to register three goals. Adam Agar and Justin Manning tried hardest for the defeated hosts Conaghy Shamrocks 0-8 St Martins 1-6 On a brutal morning at the Polo Grounds with the rain teeming down St Martins put in a gritty and determined display to edge out their local rivals. With Harry Kealy,Paul Murphy and Justin Manning playing well in defense, Adan Agar working hard in midfield and Dan Doyle,Daragh Quinlan and Robert Dowling combining well in attack the lads held on for a great win. The crucial score for the saints was a well taken goal from John Murphy.

Tullogher-Rosbercon 2-2 St Martins 2-8

In this winner take all clash with the victors progressing to the quarter final, captain Robert Dowling won the toss and elected to play with the gale force wind in the first half.

Knowing that a big lead was required if we were to have any chance the lads played some great football to lead by 2-6 to 0-1 at half time with the goals coming from Conor Mulhall and Dan Doyle and some excellent points from play by Dan (0-2), Daragh Quinlan (0-2) and Robert Dowling.

In the 2nd half the defence came to the fore where sub goalie Jack Murphy, Harry Kealy, Paul Murphy, Liam Brennan, Donal and Darragh Coughlan all put in a tremendous reargaurd action to keep the home side at bay. The whole team put in a massive effort against the wind and were rewarded with two points from play from Dan and Adam Agar to seal the win.

The long journey home didn’t seem to take long as we can now look forward to the quarter final

Conahy made the short trip to Muckalee to take on the Senior footballers in the League semi-final.
