U12 play O’Loughlins in Go Games

On a fine evening in Muckalee on 13th August St Martins red ream played O’Loughlins in the next round of the go games. O’loughlins got off to a flying start and caught St Martins cold. a goal and 3 points by their full forward had Martins reeling. Slowly St martins got back into the game and won a free close to the goal which was saved at the first attempt but the rebound was finished to the net by Justin Manning. Some fine points cut the deficit coming up to the break. But the young saints suffered a another major set back just before half time when a high ball lobbed in ended up in the net. Again O’loughlins started the second half brightly and got in for another goal. But that score sparked St Martins into life and they stormed into the game after this with goals from Tommy Butler and Donal Coughlan and fine points from Harry Kealy, Shane Fahey,Conor Mulhall, James Carrigan and Tommy Lawlor. A late free gave up a minor score to O’loughlins.

Martin’s into final.

St. Martin’s and Young Ireland’s went head to head in Clara Gaa Grounds this evening in the Alyward Cup semi-final.  On a dark, wet evening, the early exchanges were close. as they matched each other with points.  However, the breakthrough came for Martin’s 10 minutes in when the ball was dropped into the square and Tom Breen connected with it to send it to the net.  With that welcome boost for the team,  they ploughed on making and taking their scores.  The half time score stood at 1-8 to Young Ireland’s 0-8.  The second half was a dogged affair with Young Ireland’s piling on the pressure scoring 2 goals of their own and went 5 points up.  Whilst their last score came with 10 minutes left, St. Martin’s took advantage creating scores to reduce the deficit.  A second goal came for the men from the hills when a long ball was sent in and David Breen caught it and finished it to the net while coming under pressure.  The St. Martin’s men won out winners by the narrowest of margins 2-15 to Young Ireland’s 2-14.  They now progress to the final where they await the winners of the second semi-final.

Goals win games

Goals win games as St. Martin’s made sure to come away with a win in the Junior hurling Championship against Tullaroan this evening.  The men from St. Martin’s settled into the game scoring 1-2 with a lovely goal when Paul Maher gave a great pass to Shane Kinsella who duly finished it to the net.  However, that was to be the last score for a while as Tullaroan started to hurl and got the deficit down to a point with their full forward line of Peter Walsh, Michael Brennan and Shane Walsh all scoring.  But then in the 27th minute, a second goal was on the cards for St. Martin’s as a high ball was lobbed into the square by Shane Kinsella, and it was Paul Maher who finished it to the net.  Tom Morrissey slotted over the final score of the half to leave the half time score St. Martin’s 2-5, Tullaroan 0-7.  In the second half, St. Martin’s increased their lead with fine points from James Kelly, Shane Kinsella, Donal Shore and Paul Maher whilst Tullaroan tried hard to reduce the deficit with points from Edmund Campion, Josh Moore and Richard Butler.  Donal Shore made sure that Tullaroan didn’t get too close as he  finished a bullet of a shot to the net  and Luke Maher added 2 points to put 11 between the sides.  Tullaroan staged somewhat of a late rally when a Richard Butler free dropped into the back of the net.  In the final minute of the game, the aforementioned goaled a penalty but it was a little too late for Tullaroan as St. Martin’s ran out deserving winners with a score of 3-13 to Tullaroan’s 2-11.  The team played well as a whole and now look forward to meeting either James Stephen’s or Mooncoin in the next round of the Championship.

Junior A’s bow out.

St. Martin’s and Emeralds lined out against each other in the North Junior A Championship this evening.  In a poorly attended St. Lachtain’s Park, it was the Emeralds that got out of the trap first and went into a 1-4 lead.  St. Martin’s took some time to get settled but once they had, they took their scoring chances as they came and lead at half time by a solitary point 0-11 to Emeralds 1-7.  In the second half, Emeralds came back with a vengeance but St. Martin’s kept them at bay courtesy of 1-1 from David Breen and points from Shane Kinsella and Donal Shore.  However, with the loss of Aidan Lawlor through injury, Emeralds pulled away to secure the game and leave St. Martin’s looking down the tracks at a Relegation final.  Final score Emeralds 1-17, St. Martin’s 1-14.
