Saints go marching on!
St. Martin’s went to Danesfort to take on Mooncoin in search of their second win in the Junior Hurling Championship. Both teams started out trading points with Martin’s points coming from Shane Kinsella on free’s and Donal Shore pointing from play. While Mooncoin drove a lot of wides, the northerners continued making scores with Shane Kinsella adding another 2 points to his tally courtesy of Paddy Dowling and Paul Maher winning puck-outs and getting the passes in. However, in the 25th minute, St. Martin’s suffered a set back when a player was sent off with a straight red card, for what, no one knows, but the lads didn’t let that get them down as Kieran Kelly got a great goal made from a pass from Tom Morrissey just before half time. The half time score stood at St. Martin’s 1-5 to Mooncoin’s 0-4 Mooncoin came out fighting in the second half in the hope of turning the game around but while they were shooting wides, Shane Kinsella and Bryan Byrne kept the scoreboard ticking over. Tom Morrissey extended the lead even further in the 16th minute of the half. In a great display of team work, Brendan Maher cleared a ball from the back line to Bryan Byrne who laid a quick pass off to Paddy Dowling. Great vision by Paddy saw the ball been delivered to Paul Maher who gave a pass to Tom. There was no doubt he was intent on goal as he hammered it to the back of the net to put 9 points between the sides. Mooncoin rallied in the last 15 minutes with Stephen Crowley, Cormac Fleming, Jamie McGrath and Eric Wall all pointing to reduce the deficit somewhat. The Southern men were in hard luck when Jason Shore and his defenders did well to clear away a goal attempt. To finish the game off nicely, Shane Kinsella and Tom Morrissey both scored points to help St. Martin’s run out winners with a score of 2-11 to Mooncoin’s 0-10. After a great team display, they now await the winners of neighbours Erin’s Own and Clara in the next round.
