Report on Junior B All-Ireland Final                       14/3/10

St. Martins 0-14            St. Mary’s Rathkeale 0-14

St. Martins have to do it all again next Sunday

This game was a tough battle from the beginning.  Martins playing against the wind opened the scoring with points by Dermot Lawlor (f) and Mick Morrissey.  St. Mary’s replied with 2 points from Mark O Sullivan.  Martins were dominating at this stage but were finding it hard to score.  Both sets of backs were working hard.  2 points by Dermot Lawlor were cancelled out with points by Damien Quaid and Keith Harnett (ST. Mary’s).  Then Damien Quaid caught a good ball middle of the field and put it between the posts to put St. Mary’s ahead for the first time. St. Mary’s added 2 more before half time to leave them ahead going in.  Half time: St. Martins 0-07 St. Mary’s 0-09.  Martins started the second half with the aid of the strong wind and had points by Stephen Murphy (f) and Dermot Lawlor but St. Mary’s continued to work hard and had points from Shane Hourigan (2) to lead by 3 with 18mins gone.  St. Mary’s conceded 2 frees which were duly converted by martins to leave the margin down to a point.  Then Brian Malone got the equaliser with 6 mins remaining. Then David Shore caught a good ball from the puck out and was fouled by Mark O Sullivan (St. Mary’s). Free put over the bar by Dermot Lawlor. Martins ahead with time just up but then they gave a free away and Shane Hourigan punished them by putting the ball over the crossbar. Martins had a chance to win when they were awarded a free on St. Mary’s 65 but unfortunally it veered to the right of the posts and wide. Following the puck out referee Willie Barrett blew the final whistle.  All to play for the next day.
