Juniors lose out

A goal at the final whistle secured a 2nd chance for O’Loughlin Gaels as this All County Junior League Quarter Final had to go to extra time.  This game opened up with gusto as both teams opened their accounts with wides.  However, once each side settled, the scores came.  There were great passages of play as St. Martin’s dominated the first half but with a lot of missed chances the half time score stood at 0-6 to O’Loughlins 0-5.  The second half saw O’Loughlin Gaels getting 2 lucky goals.   St. Martin’s had advanced their lead with two points before O’Loughlins first goal came to level the game after the loss of Luke Maher and Aidan Lawlor to injury which somewhat weakened the home-side.  Martin’s worked hard to increase their lead once more to three points.  Lady luck deserted them when a high ball dropping in around the goal and a overhead pull by Martin Dowling, connected beautifully,  just sailed the wrong side of the net.  Then in the 4th minute of injury time, O’Loughlins were awarded a sideline cut which was worked in and ended in the back of the net to steal a draw game.  Extra time ensued, and with both legs and light fading fast, topped with controversial decisions, O’Loughlins outscored St. Martin’s by a point at half time of extra time.  The eventual winners added a further 3 points to seal their victory by 4 points on a score-line of 2-11 to 0-13.

Junior A’s win by the slimmest of margins

On a wet evening, scoring two goals would almost suggest one would be home and dry.  However, this Junior A game between St. Martin’s and Carlow Town suggested otherwise.  St. Martin’s were first to take the initiative with a pass from Eugene Maher to Tom Morrissey opening our account with a point.  With the sides trading points compliments of Luke Maher and Tom Morrissey, it was level pegging at 0-4 a piece when Conor Kinsella finished a pass from Tom Morrissey to the net leaving us up by a goal at half time. 1-6 to 0-6.  The second half opened up with Carlow Town running at us and closing the gap with a goal of their own and a point to take the lead for the first time in the game.  However, our lads weren’t going to surrender that easily and with a point from Ciaran Brennan and a pointed free from Eugene Maher, we took the lead back by the slimmest of margins.  With each side digging their heels in, St. Martin’s fought hard and our break came when Tom Morrissey caught a great ball at mid field, raced through the defence and from 20 metres out blasted the ball to the net to leave four points in it with 3 minutes left.  Carlow Town were not one’s to lie down and put the pressure on our backs who did well to keep their advances out only conceding 3 points to leave the final score 2-11 to 1-13.

Lawlor inspires Junior’s

On a cold, showery evening in Coon, St. Martin’s and Erins Own finished all square in the J.J Kavanagh & Son’s Junior Hurling League after a well contested battle between neighbours.  It was Erins Own who excelled in the first half despite the best efforts of our backs with the excellent Aidan Lawlor and Mick Morrissey joining forces with Brian Cadigan, Aidan Murphy, Shane Egan and Paddy Dowling.  With the score at half time of Erins Own 0-10 to St. Martin’s 0-4, our Juniors had a big mountain to climb in the second half.  With Thomas Walsh and Ciaran Brennan feeding in the ball from mid-field, our forwards of Eugene Maher, Noel D’arcy, Kieran Kelly, Damien Tynan, Martin Dowling and John Haughney chipped away creating and taking scores.  However, the breakthrough came when Paddy Dowling landed a high ball into the square with Damien Tynan flicking it passed Davy Buggy the Erins Own goalkeeper.  With a minute left on the clock and one point between the sides, St. Martin’s were awarded a free which Kieran Kelly duely put over the bar to leave the final score St. Martin’s 1-10, Erins Own 0-13.

Junior A’s suffer defeat

St. Martin’s played Lisdowney in the North Junior “A” League in Muckalee.  On a lovely afternoon for hurling, St. Martin’s found it hard to get going and trailed at half time 0-10 to 1-5.  The goal coming from a long range free from the excellent Jason Shore landing in the square and was tapped in by Damien Tynan on the stroke of half time.  Things did not improve for the hard trying St. Martin’s in the second half.  However, our backs did well to keep Lisdowney goal-less with loyal servants Martin Dowling, Aidan Lawlor and Nicholas Purcell joined by the youthful Shane Egan, Jack Dowling and Ruairí Kinsella.  Thomas Walsh and Stephen Walsh battled hard in midfield while our forwards battled gamely against a solid Lisdowney defence.  The hard trying Tom Morrissey and Shane Coonan making up the centre with Shane Kinsella, Damien Tynan, Eugene Maher and James Kelly on the wings.  When introduced, John Haughney and David Walsh tried hard also.  Lisdowney ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-19 to 1-8.
