Junior A’s narrowly miss out.

On a damp evening in Coon, St. Martin’s took on St. Lachtains in the first round of the North Junior A Championship.  The Martin’s men went ahead from the start notching up 3 points before St. Lachtain’s kicked into life and outscored St. Martin’s by 1-4.  St. Martin’s battled back and with points from Shane Kinsella and Tom Morrissey kept them in touch.  The Freshford men were determined on scoring goals and narrowly missed a chance by putting it wide.  However, they weren’t going to make the same mistake again and their second goal put 4 points between the sides coming up to half time.  Once more, St. Martin’s didn’t give up and a well worked ball from Donal Shore, saw David Breen finish the ball to the back of the Lachtain’s net to leave the half time score 1-6 to St. Lachtain’s 2-4.  On resumption, Freshford extended their lead before Martin’s levelled matters with 2 points from Shane Kinsella.  With the homeside tapping over the points and Freshford bearing down on goal, it was clear that this was going to be a close finish.  A goal by Conor Kinsella, from a high ball let in by Donal Shore put Martin’s up by two points.  Lachtain’s fought back with 3 points of their own and once more, Martin’s had to pick it up a gear to get their 2 point lead back again.  With 2 minutes left on the clock, St. Martin’s struggled to keep a determined Freshford side at bay, but alas, they scrambled in the square to finish the ball to the net and secure the game with a one point win.  Final score: St. Martin’s 2-13, St. Lachtain’s 4-8

U12 Go games begin.

At a well appointed Muckalee pitch St Martins U12s Dearg Team played their first go game on Thursday evening 25th July last against Barrow Rangers. The large attendance of family and friends were treated to an entertaining game. The first half was even enough and some good saves from Joe Reid and clearances from his defence in from of him Shane O’Neill Mathew Shortall and Tommy Butler kept Barrow Rangers at bay.  Eventually St Martins midfield powered into the game and took control. With the constant supply of ball into the forwards the scores started to come. With goals from Shane Fahey, James Carrigan, Thomas Lawlor and Justin Manning. Points added from Conor Mulhll, Harry Kealy and Donal Coughlan, St Martins were well in control. The young saints hadn’t it all their own way at the start of the second half and Barrow Rangers piled on the pressure but good play from Justin Manning and Darragh Coughlan kept ball repelled and second half goalie Andrew Buggy made two good saves. Then a great run by Donal Coughlan ended up in a goal for St Martins. From the puck out a good move was finished to the net by Harry Kealy and from here on St Martins scored some fine points and finished the game well. The team play, skill, work rate, covering back and score taking was exceptional from these young hurlers.

Thank you to Robert Reid for refereeing  the game. And the parents who helped in setting up the pitch and clear up after the game.

Junior’s hold on for win

On a pleasant evening for hurling, St. Martin’s took on Dicksboro in the Junior Hurling League.  Dicksboro were the first to get off the mark scoring 3 unanswered points before St. Martin’s settled into business with a free pointed by Bryan Byrne.  With a further 2 points from Byrne and a free from Kieran Kelly, the sides were level.  St. Martin’s pulled away adding 2 more points before a pass into Kieran Kelly from David Breen saw the ball been driven to the back of the Boro net.  Kieran Kelly added another pointed free just before the half time whistle to leave the score 1-7 to 0-4.  St. Martin’s ploughed on to extend their lead before Dicksboro were denied a goal when Brendan Maher blocked the shot.  However, Dicksboro rallied and with 5 minutes left on the clock, got two goals within minutes of each other.  However, with daylight fading, St. Martin’s held on for the win on a scoreline of 1-15 to 2-10.

St. Martins minors meet Lisdowney.

St Martins travelled to Lisdowney on Monday evening where they took on the favourites for the Roinn B Championship

A number of missed chances in the first half proved costly and they trailed at the break 0-8 to 0-2.

The second half proved to be a much more exciting match with both sides having periods of dominance.  St Martins twice pulled the game back to two points but just couldn’t pull level and eventually ran out of steam. A late Lisdowney goal as Martins chased the game wasn’t a fair reflection on the evenings fare. St Martins now play Kilmacow next Monday at 7.30pm in the first round of the championship.
