St. Martin’s vs. Graigue-Ballycallan
St. Martin’s Senior Hurlers took on Graigue-Ballycallan this evening in the Senior Hurling League. With everything to play for, St. Martin’s went out quietly optimistic and were 3 points to the good when Graigue-Ballycallan got on the board with a point. With our lads taking their scores and going 2 points up, Graigue-Ballycallan rocked the boat with a goal to take the lead. However, the team did not give up and added a further 4 points before half time to leave the score 0-10 to Ballycallan’s 1-5. The second half opened up with St. Martin’s hurling against the wind and struggling to maintain their lead. Graigue-Ballycallan seemed to get a lot of the breaks and got a lucky to goal which left St. Martin’s up by a point. With a few minutes left and trailing by 3 points, St martin’s looked like they had secured a free in when controversially, the referee awarded the free to Graigue-Ballycallan which their goalie pointed 30 metres from his own goal. The feature of the second half was the huge Graigue-Ballycallan puck outs, 2 of which were carried all the way over the end line. St. Martin’s made a last ditch effort with a goal coming from Brian Mulhall to leave the final score St. Martin’s 1-16 to Graigue-Ballycallan’s 3-14.

Tuesday night 7pm 14th May saw St. Martins U16 Hurling team take on Graigue Ballycallan on their home ground in what can only be described as one of the great come backs. It took St. Martins 35 minutes to put a score on the board but when they started they could not be stopped. The St. Martins could not do anything right it seemed for the first half and failing to put up any scores left themselves under serious pressure at the break with the half time score 1-4 to no score.
After some serious soul searching the second half started with Graigue Ballycallan getting a point but then St. Martin’s found their form and put away 2 quick goals and some nice points and kept the pressure on even when Graigue Ballycallan tried to respond and St. Martins ran out winners in the end with a final score of 3-6 to 1-8.

Played in Nowlan Park, St. Martin’s took on Carrickshock in the St. Canice’s Senior Hurling League. A wind assisted St. Martin’ s got off to a dream start scoring 5 points before their opponents registered their first point in the 8th minute. With Ollie Walsh in great from at centre half back with John Maher and Colin McGrath converting frees and great scores from John Mulhall, Joe Maher and Canice Maher, St. Martin’s went in at half time leading by 5 points, 0-11 to Carrickshock 0-6. In the second half, St. Martin’s tried to keep their lead with wind assisted Carrickshock winning a lot of the ball. Midway through the 2nd half, Canice Maher made a rampaging run through the Carrickshock defence laying off a nice pass to Brian Mulhall, who despite being heavily tackled, lashed the ball to the net leaving 5 points between the sides. However, 2 goals from the 21 and 2 points put Carrickshock ahead by 3 with 6 minutes remaining. Then, Brian Mulhall fielded a high ball and gave a great pass to Robert Shore who put the ball in the back of the opponents net to level the game. A big blow to St. Martin’s was the loss of John Maher to a serious hand injury. The concession of frees proved costly as Carrickshock ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-16 to 2-13.

Lawlor inspires Junior’s
On a cold, showery evening in Coon, St. Martin’s and Erins Own finished all square in the J.J Kavanagh & Son’s Junior Hurling League after a well contested battle between neighbours. It was Erins Own who excelled in the first half despite the best efforts of our backs with the excellent Aidan Lawlor and Mick Morrissey joining forces with Brian Cadigan, Aidan Murphy, Shane Egan and Paddy Dowling. With the score at half time of Erins Own 0-10 to St. Martin’s 0-4, our Juniors had a big mountain to climb in the second half. With Thomas Walsh and Ciaran Brennan feeding in the ball from mid-field, our forwards of Eugene Maher, Noel D’arcy, Kieran Kelly, Damien Tynan, Martin Dowling and John Haughney chipped away creating and taking scores. However, the breakthrough came when Paddy Dowling landed a high ball into the square with Damien Tynan flicking it passed Davy Buggy the Erins Own goalkeeper. With a minute left on the clock and one point between the sides, St. Martin’s were awarded a free which Kieran Kelly duely put over the bar to leave the final score St. Martin’s 1-10, Erins Own 0-13.
Team: Jason Shore, Brian Cadigan, Aidan Murphy, Shane Egan, Paddy Dowling, Aidan Lawlor, Mick Morrissey, Thomas Walsh, Ciaran Brennan, Eugene Maher, Noel D’arcy, Kieran Kelly, Damien Tynan, Martin Dowling, John Haughney.
Scorers: Kieran Kelly 0-7 (5f, 1,65) Damien Tynan 1-2, Paddy Dowling 0-1
