Cyril Farrell coaches St. Martin’s U16 & U18 for one night only.
Thursday night 5th September saw the appearance of a special coach coming through the gate in the Muckalee Field to give the St. Martins U16 and U18 a very special training session. On the inviatation of our Bord na nÓg chairman Patrick O’Flynn, Cyril Farrell who was the manager of the Galway senior hurling team in the 1980s and 1990s that led Galway to four consecutive All Ireland finals appearances from 1985 through 1988 made himself available to give our players a very unique, insightful and encouraging night of hurling excellence.
A big thank you to Cyril for the night and also to all involved in arranging the night which turned out to be a great success indeed. The field was in excellent condition and was extremely well turned out as commented on by Cyril and he also praised the great work being done in the Club and the excellent quality of the lights.

Martin’s shade tight battle.
A second half goal for Fenian’s in this St. Canice’s Credit Union league tie looked like as if this game had slipped from St. Martin’s grasp as they came under pressure from a gallant Fenian’s side. Played in a cold St. Lachtain’s Park, both sides went out to secure another two badly needed points. John Maher opened proceedings for the winners with a fine point from a pass by Canice Maher. However, that was to be their only score for 13 minutes while the Johnstown men notched up 4 points of their own from Kieran Grehan, Kevin Power and Mark Webster. The men from the hills did not let Fenian’s get too far ahead however and replied with scores from James Dowling and John Maher from frees with Robert Shore putting the Martin’s side up by a point. Just before half time, Conor Tobin pointed for the Fenian’s to leave the sides level at half time on 0-6 a piece. With the assistance of the wind, Martin’s men Thomas Breen, Canice Maher and John Maher came flying out of the traps after half time to put the side two up as they traded points with Fenian’s corner forward, Mark Webster. In the 37th minute, St. Martin’s lost the hard working Paul Maher to injury but the leader of the pack John Maher and John Mulhall increased the lead even further to put four between the sides. With a sense of urgency, Fenian’s upped the gears and mid way through the half, Johnstown’s Full forward Kevin Power found the back of the net to leave just the bare minimum between the sides. Carter’s men had it all to do but fine points from James Dowling, Thomas Breen, John Maher and Eoin McGrath ensured that Martin’s retained the lead. The Johnstown men went on the offensive continuously putting the ball in around the square trying to find the net but with the half back line of Bryan Byrne, Paddy Nolan and Michael Morrissey hitting a lot of ball during the hour and impressive full back Ollie Walsh with Niall Moran and Shane Cadigan and the ever alert Colin McGrath as the last line in the defence ensured the Fenian’s were kept at bay. With just 3 points between the sides, and time nearly up, Robert Shore fielded a pass from Thomas Breen and pointed to insure the Fenian’s men couldn’t take the lead as they ran out winners on a score line of St. Martin’s 0-18 Fenian’s 1-11.

Kevin Kealy Tournament
The Kevin Kealy tournamanet will take place on Saturday morning 7th September in Muckalee at 11:15 am.
The game will be between St. Martin’s and Cloneen and all are most welcome so please come out and support the teams.

In this local derby, St. Martin’s and Erin’s Own battled it out in the second round of the Junior Championship. The St. Martin’s line out got off to a flying start working up a 3 point lead with points from Shane Kinsella, Bryan Byrne and Luke Maher before Erin’s Own got off the mark. However, with all of our half forward line of Tom Morrissey, Brian Mulhall and Shane Kinsella picking off points along with Luke Maher and Bryan Byrne scoring, St. Martin’s kept ahead of the Comer brigade. Just before half time, the towering and hard working Brian Mulhall was lost to injury after sustaining a hard knock and with that came the half time whistle to leave the score St. Martin’s 0-14 to Erin’s Own 0-7. In the second half, a gallant Erin’s Own side came out fighting to whittle down the deficit. They came within 1 point of the leaders when they got a goal to leave the score at 0-16 to 1-12. It was an exciting finish as both sides gathered all they had to make it to the next stage. Once again, Bryan Byrne and Shane Kinsella steadied the ship with the last two scores as St. Martin’s ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-18 to Erin’s Own 1-13.

Minors take on challenge in Palmerstown.
On a lovely morning for hurling St Martins Minors faced the challenge of one of the favourites for the minor a championship the shape of Dicksboro.
The higher standard of hurling caught out St Martins early on and they trailed 4-10 to 0-4 at the break having played against the breeze.
They adapted much better to the pace in the second half and bossed proceedings winning the half 1-9 to 0-4.

U8’s Camogie Blitz in Muckalee
St. Martin’s U8’s Camogie team played their final blitz of the season which they hosted in Muckalee last Saturday 24th August . St. Martin’s played against Lisdowney, St. Brigid’s and St. Lachtain’s on the day and the girls provided the supporters to a fine display of Camogie in each game. The St. Martin’s girls showed some great skill on the day which is down to their determination and practice throughout the season and to their coaches Noel Shortall, Marie Healy and Ann Stapleton.
The girls were presented their medals for 2013 on the day by Senior player Edwina Keane.

Magnificent Four
Muckalee made history with a great win after a titanic struggle against James Stephens in the Senior Football Championship played in Freshford. On a lovely day for football Muckalee set off at a blistering pace with three points from the assured boot of Colin McGrath the first a sweeping move down the field the second a pass from John Maher the third a free from the left sideline. James Stephens opened their account in the eight minute with a point from Eoin McCormack and three further points from Jackie Tyrell and a David McCormack free completed the scoring for the City side in the first half. The game took a significant turn in the eighteenth minute when a Bryan Byrne pointed effort came off the upright and the ever alert Robert Shore crashed the rebound to the net and from the resulting kickout scored a point after a pass from John Maher. Colin McGrath gave the men from Muckalee a one goal advantage at the break when scoring after a pass from Shane Coonan . Half -time score 1-5 to 0-5. On the resumption it was anyones game and the first score came from Robert Shore in the eight minute finishing well taking a pass from John Maher . At this stage goalkeeper John Coonan, the full back line of James Maher ,Oliver Walsh and Aidan Murphy had to show their resolve along with half-back line of Martin Dowling , Patrick Nolan and Michael Morrissey defending well under preasure. Captain Paul Maher , Joe Maher with Tom Morrissey and Shane Coonan did trojan work to take the fight to James Stephens. The Muckalee Selectors showed the strength of their panel with Canice Maher John Mulhall and Eoin McGrath coming on to good effect. James Stephens came more into the game with points from Niall Tyrell,Mark Hoban, David McCormack and a goal from Eoin Mccormack to take the lead with five minutes to go. Then Muckalee showed their worth as reigning champions to finish strongly with points from John Mulhall, Colin and Eoin McGrath and a well dispatched penalty from Colin after a foul on Bryan Byrne . The final score was 2-10 to 1-9 setting up a magnificent four in a row for Muckalee . Well done to Manager Martin Dowd, Trainer Ronan Ruane Selectors Larry Maher and Pauric Keegan and the rest of the hard working Officers and Comittee for all their work on and off the field. County Board Chairman Tom Brennan complemented the Teams ,the referee and his umpire and linesmen for their part and presented the Cup to Captain Paul Maher, who thanked the whole group of players and managment for their efforts in the win and Jim Bolger for his continuous support and sponsorship to Football in the Parish.
